Understanding skincare and the purpose of each product is a process. Not only do you need to understand the products, but you also need to understand your skin. Some products may seem pointless or unnecessary for your skin, but each product has many benefits for your skin, especially toners.

Toners help remove any dirt left after cleansing, and it helps to clear your pores; they also have major impacts on the appearance of your skin as they help to brighten your complexion and reduce the appearance of your pores.

Each of these toners has all-natural products and many natural benefits for each skin type. Using natural products is healthier for your skin and will help keep it in the best condition for longer.

Benefits of using a toner

Tightens your pores – Having large pores allows more dirt and oils to enter your skin which can cause your skin to look dull and dirty. Using a toner will tighten your pores, and give your skin a cleaner, more fresh look. It stops the skin from looking oily and it also prevents breakouts and can help stop or lessen acne.

Detoxifying the skin – There are many chemicals in makeup and other products we put on our face daily that can affect the appearance of our skin. A toner helps to remove the chemicals and residue from day-to-day life and stops them from seeping into the skin and creating a build up.

Restore pH balance – One of the main purposes of using a toner is balancing and restoring the pH balance. Many factors can affect your pH balance throughout the day, so using a toner helps bring your skin back to its natural pH. This helps to lower the chance of infections and irritation, makes your skin less prone to oiliness and gives it a smoother and more even appearance.

6 Natural Skin Toners for Different Types of Skin

Key tip: Depending on how you choose to incorporate a toner into your skincare routine, you should always moisturise after using it. After using a toner, your skin can absorb and retain more moisture than it would’ve before, so by moisturising straight after, your skin will gain more benefit from it and be more hydrated.

Rosewater

Rosewater makes a good natural toner as it has many amazing benefits. It holds anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and hydrating properties, which are all great for your skin and it is suitable for all skin types.

Rosewater also helps balance the skin’s pH levels as other skincare products such as cleansers can be too alkaline, so using this straight after can help bring it back to the correct level. And on top of all of that, it is also a gentle toner that smells amazing as well.

How to Make:

Mix 1/4 cup of rose water with 1/4 cup of witch hazel, and mix well to make sure it is completely blended. Witch hazel is also a great natural product to use in a toner as it helps to shrink pores, helps to soothe the skin, and reduces inflammation also. Once you have mixed the two, it is ready to use. You could either apply it as a mist spray or apply it to your face using a cotton ball. Repeat this twice a day.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera is one of the best natural skincare ingredients, no matter how used. It provides effective relief for several skin conditions such as dry skin, eczema, acne, and ageing skin. This is the perfect toner for sensitive skin as aloe vera is one the most gentle products you can use on your skin and it’ll give amazing results.

Not only that, it replenishes your skin as it is super hydrating and will help brighten the skin as it improves the overall look of the skin. Applying aloe vera to the skin in a toner form is great for ageing skin as it helps smooth out wrinkles and helps to restore elasticity.

How to Make:

There are two ways you can make this toner; you can either make it straight from an aloe leaf or use the gel mixed with rose water.

Aloe leaf: Cut the leaf down the side opening it so that you have two pieces. Squeeze the aloe vera out from the leaf. Apply it straight to your face; there’s no need to mix it with anything. Leave it on your face for 20 minutes; when it has been on for the recommended time was off with normal water.

Aloe gel and rose water: mix 1/2 cup of aloe gel and 1/2 rose water. Make sure the two are mixed well and blended into one liquid. Apply this to your face after cleansing and leave it to soak into your skin. There is no need to wash it off after a certain amount of time unless you choose to do so.

Green tea

Green tea has many health benefits, including benefits for your skin. Using green tea as a toner is good; as it helps to maintain all-around healthy skin and helps remove the noticeable signs of ageing. This includes wrinkles, age spots, and freckles.

It is also rich in antioxidants which can help neutralise free radicals, which are responsible for breaking down the skin’s collagen and causing blemishes, wrinkles, and loose skin.

Another amazing benefit of green tea is that it locks in moisture in the skin and stops dryness, making the skin softer. Not only that, but it soaks away the excess oil from the skin’s surface, which gets rid of the shininess of oily skin.

How to Make:

Firstly you need to make a cup of green tea. Leave the teabag in the water to brew for 10 minutes and leave it to cool down completely. Once it is cooled down, transfer it to a spray bottle and add 3 or 4 drops of tea tree essential oil; shake gently to make sure it is mixed together. Your green tea toner is ready to use; spray all over your face twice a day.

Chamomile tea

Chamomile tea is one of the best natural toners you could use if you have dry and damaged skin. Chamomile tea provides deep nourishment to the skin, so not only will it solve the dryness on the surface but also the dryness in the deeper layers of the skin.

It has natural bleaching properties, which help tighten skin pores and lighten skin complexions, which is a good benefit for darker skin tones as hyper-pigmentation is more common due to more melanin cells so this will help tackle that.

How to Make:

Boil 100ml of water and steep one chamomile tea bag in it for about 5 minutes to allow it to be as strong as possible. Leave to cool down. Once it is cool enough to put on your skin, apply the tea to your face using a cotton ball. Leave it on your face for 15 to 20 minutes to let your pores soak it in; when the time is up, wash your face with water. Repeat this once a day.

Mint Leaves

Mint has many anti-bacterial properties that make a great toner for oily skin. It gets rid of the dirt and build-up in the pores and shrinks them, making the skin smoother, even and look more youthful. The reason why mint is good to use for oily skin is that it minimises the oil in the skin, which will help combat acne and other blemishes.

How to Make:

Wash two handfuls of fresh mint leaves. Add them to 500ml of boiled water and leave to steep for 5 minutes. Once it’s ready, strain the liquid and leave it to cool down; once it is cooled completely, you’ll need to store it in the refrigerator to use it daily. When you are ready to apply it to your skin, apply a few drops of the toner to a cotton ball and wipe it all over your face. Repeat it twice a day.

Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is another good natural toner as it helps to restore and balance the skin’s pH levels. It removes dead skin cells and shrinks the skin’s pores, evens out the skin tone, removes dark spots, and improves the overall complexion. Apple cider vinegar is also packed with many vitamins and is also a natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent.

How to Make:

Mix 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 4 tablespoons of distilled water. Use distilled water as it is free of impurities and works well with the skin’s pH levels. Mix well. Apply using a cotton ball, soak it in your toner and gently wipe on your face. Repeat twice a day.

Summary

I hope this has been useful and helped you find the best natural skin toner for your skin type. Toners are an essential part of any skincare routine, no matter your skin colour or type, there are many benefits that most can gain from.

Toners are the most questioned products in skincare as many questions whether it has a real effect on your skin, but I do think it is best to use a toner. You may not be able to see the effects on the surface straight away, but what’s doing in your skin can really help in the long run.
